When to keep PNG and when to convert

Keep PNG for logos, icons, UI with sharp edges and anything that needs transparency in a place that doesn't support WebP. The tool then lowers the pixel dimensions until the file fits your cap.

Convert to WebP for screenshots, graphics and photos with transparency: it keeps the alpha channel and is usually 5 to 10 times smaller than PNG at the same look. Convert to JPG for photographs saved as PNG by mistake; there is no transparency but the file drops dramatically.

Phone screenshots are 1080 to 1440 px wide PNGs of 1 to 3 MB. For sharing in chat, WebP at the same pixels is about 150 KB with identical text sharpness. For a form that insists on PNG, Fit within 800 px usually brings the file under 300 KB.

Questions people ask

Why is my PNG so large?

PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Photos and gradients don't compress well that way. Converting to WebP or JPG keeps the look and cuts the size drastically.

Can I compress a PNG and keep transparency?

Yes. Keep PNG, or convert to WebP, which also supports transparency. JPG does not.

Does this reduce PNG colours like other tools?

No palette reduction is applied, so colours stay exact. Size comes from pixel reduction or format conversion.
