Keeping thumbnail text sharp
Thumbnails are viewed at 200 to 400 px wide on phones, so YouTube scales them down again. Text with thin strokes turns muddy. Use bold type, high contrast, and let the preset sharpen after the resize; the difference shows most on small screens.
For Shorts, use the 9:16 preset (1080×1920). For the channel banner, the preset exports 2560×1440 and the preview marks the 1235×338 safe area that every device shows.

What is the YouTube thumbnail size?
16:9, at least 1280×720 pixels. YouTube now recommends larger, up to 3840×2160, but 1280×720 or 1920×1080 is what most creators upload.
Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too big?
Uploads from the mobile app must be under 2 MB. Compress with the 1280×720 preset here and upload again.
PNG or JPG for thumbnails?
JPG under 2 MB is the safe choice and looks identical after YouTube's own compression. PNG only helps for flat graphics without photos.
Do I need a verified account?
