Instagram's high-quality upload setting is one switch: open your profile, tap the menu, go to Settings and activity › Media quality and turn on Upload at highest quality. On Android the screen is called Data usage and media quality. While you are there, make sure Use less mobile data is off, and post on Wi-Fi. That is the whole settings side of "HD" on Instagram.
It is worth doing, and it takes thirty seconds. It is also, at best, a third of the result. The switch decides whether your phone reduces the file before sending it. It does not change what the server does afterwards, and it cannot improve a file that is wrong to begin with. This guide covers both halves: the exact menus, what the switch really controls, and the file preparation that does the rest.
Where the setting is in 2026
- Open Instagram and go to your profile (the icon at the bottom right).
- Tap the menu icon (three lines) at the top right.
- Tap Settings and activity.
- Scroll to Your app and media and tap Media quality. On Android the entry is Data usage and media quality.
- Turn on Upload at highest quality.
- On the same screen, turn off Use less mobile data.
If your app still shows Settings and privacy instead of Settings and activity, you are on an older build. The switch is under Data usage there, with the same name. Updating the app is worth it anyway; the newer builds are the ones that handle 3:4 photos and the 3:4 grid properly.
The same toggle also appears at the moment of posting. On the final share screen of a post or reel, scroll down to More options (older builds call it Advanced settings) and check the Media quality entry. It is the same switch, so if the global setting is on it should already be on there, but it is a good place to confirm before a post you care about.
What the switch actually does
Instagram's app is allowed to reduce a photo or video on the phone before uploading it, to save data and finish faster. That reduction is most aggressive on mobile data and on weak connections, and heaviest for video. With Upload at highest quality on, the app sends the best version it has, every time, and accepts that the upload may take longer. That is all the toggle is: a promise not to shrink the file on your side.
For photos, the practical effect is that a correctly sized 1080 px JPEG arrives at Instagram's servers as the file you exported, rather than as a further-compressed copy. For reels and video stories the effect is larger, because the app-side video encode is where most of the visible damage to reels happens.
What it does not do
This is where most "I turned it on and nothing changed" complaints come from.
- It does not raise the 1080 px limit. Instagram keeps widths between 320 and 1080 px and scales everything wider down to 1080. The switch changes nothing about that.
- It does not stop the server re-encode. Every upload is still converted to a JPEG in sRGB on Instagram's side. The switch only removes the extra compression pass on your phone.
- It does not fix old posts. Anything you uploaded before flipping the switch stays as it is. The only fix for an existing soft post is to delete it and upload a clean file.
- It does not fix the crop. A photo outside 1.91:1 to 4:5 (or 3:4) is still cropped in the composer.
- It is not an HD mode. WhatsApp's HD option keeps photos up to about 4096 px; Instagram has nothing like that. Feed posts top out at 1080 px whatever you switch on.
- It does not change what other people see on their phones. If a friend says your photo looks worse than it does for you, check whether they have Use less mobile data on. That setting also lowers the quality of media the app loads, not just what it uploads.
Use less mobile data, and why it matters twice
The data saver lives on the same screen as the quality switch, and it works against you in two directions. When it is on, the app can upload reduced versions of your photos and videos on a mobile connection, and it loads other people's posts at lower quality to save data. Leave it off when posting. If you turn it on again to save data while browsing, remember to check it before your next upload.
Post on Wi-Fi and let the upload finish
Instagram adapts to your connection. On a weak signal it can send a lower-quality version of a story or reel so that the upload completes. Post on Wi-Fi or a strong 5G signal, stay in the app until the progress bar disappears, and do not lock the phone halfway through. This matters most for stories, which are compressed harder than feed posts to begin with; the blurry story guide goes into that.
Prepare the file: the part that does most of the work
Instagram's own help page says it keeps a photo at its original resolution when the width is between 320 and 1080 px and the ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Since May 2025 it also accepts 3:4. A file that already meets those rules passes through the server with a single, gentle re-encode. A file that does not gets resized by a fast resampler and compressed hard, and no switch on your phone can change that.
Rule: the quality switch protects a good file. It does not make a bad file good. Export 1080 px wide, 4:5 or 3:4, JPEG, sRGB, 500 KB to 1 MB, and then turn the switch on.
The checklist for the file:
- 1080 px wide. 1080×1350 for 4:5, 1080×1440 for 3:4, 1080×1080 for square. Not the 4000 px original. The post size page lists every format.
- Cropped by you, so the composer has nothing to crop.
- Sharpened after the resize. A downscale softens edges; a light unsharp mask on the final pixels puts them back.
- JPEG in sRGB. Not PNG (converted anyway, and larger), not Display P3 or Adobe RGB (converted to sRGB and duller), not HDR (often ends up flat, and stories cannot show it at all).
- Between 500 KB and 1 MB. Smaller files come out blocky after Instagram's pass; files over about 2 MB are compressed harder.

iPhone notes
iPhones shoot HEIC in Display P3, and by default with HDR. Instagram converts all three: HEIC to JPEG, P3 to sRGB, and HDR to standard range, and the last conversion is the one that goes wrong most often, leaving a flat, greyish post. If a photo looks washed out after posting, export a standard SDR JPEG (the tool's Instagram presets output exactly that) and upload again. There is no need to change the camera to Most Compatible just for Instagram; converting at export time is enough.
Android notes
The setting has the same name on Android, under Data usage and media quality. Two extra things to check. Some gallery apps offer a "reduce size" or "resize image" option in the share sheet; leave it off, because it resizes with no sharpening and to a size Instagram will resize again. And if you share from the gallery straight into Instagram, the app receives the full camera file and does the resize itself. Sharing from the tool, or from a folder with the exported 1080 px file, avoids that.
Uploading from a computer
Instagram's website accepts photo uploads from a desktop browser. There is no app-side reduction there, so the quality switch is irrelevant; the server still resizes and re-encodes exactly as it does for the app. The same 1080 px, 500 KB to 1 MB JPEG is the right file either way. Uploading from a computer mainly helps people who edit on one, because it skips transferring the file to the phone, which is where WhatsApp and messaging apps tend to compress it again on the way.

Do the settings once and the file every time, and "HD" is as close as Instagram gets.
