Facebook · Shared webpage images

Prepare an image for a Facebook link preview

Create a deliberate wide sharing image, then connect it to your webpage. This tool exports the image file; your website controls which image a shared URL declares.

Use a source with at least 1200×630 pixels in the retained crop. Smaller sources or difficult size targets can produce smaller output dimensions. Check the downloaded file.

The image file and the webpage are separate tasks

A shared URL gets its preview information from the webpage and the sharing platform, not from the filename of an image on your computer. Preparing a good image is one part of the task. The website also needs to declare the intended sharing image in its metadata and make that file available where the platform can retrieve it.

This page exports our 1200×630 pixel wide JPEG. Use it as a working image size, not a guarantee that every Facebook card will show the full rectangle. Different shared surfaces may crop differently or choose another presentation. Keep the key subject and concise title well inside the frame so the image remains understandable if a preview trims the edges.

The compressor does not edit your webpage, upload the file to your hosting service, set Open Graph tags, clear a platform cache, or publish the link. If a preview shows the wrong image, repeatedly compressing the correct file will not fix a metadata or retrieval problem. Check the webpage's sharing configuration and the actual image URL as a separate website task after creating the export.

Build a clear wide image before downloading

Choose a source that represents the destination page accurately. An article might use a relevant photograph or a designed title image. A product page might use a recognisable product view. Avoid a crowded screenshot of the whole webpage, because its text will usually be too small to read and its browser interface adds little value to the preview.

  1. Prepare the source design or choose a suitable original photograph.
  2. Open it with the link-image preset selected.
  3. Position the wide crop and check the main subject or headline.
  4. Compare fine type, logos, and high contrast edges in the JPEG.
  5. Download the file for the separate website metadata setup.

If the source contains a headline, use enough contrast and keep it concise. The page title and description may also appear in the shared card, so the image does not need to contain every sentence of the article. Put the complete information on the destination page. If you need to revise lettering or layout, return to the editable design rather than trying to repair the compressed image.

Test the URL after the image is connected

Once the prepared file is hosted and declared by the webpage, test the actual URL you intend to share. Check that the preview uses the expected image and that the destination is the correct page. A local file looking good does not prove that Facebook can fetch it. Access controls, redirects, stale metadata, or a different canonical page can affect a link preview.

Keep the sharing image distinct from a normal feed upload. Posting a photograph with a URL in the caption is not necessarily the same presentation as sharing a webpage with its own preview card. Choose the workflow that serves the content and inspect it in the composer. This image tool cannot guarantee which card layout the platform chooses.

Save the editable source and use a clear versioned publishing filename when your website workflow needs one. If an article title or product changes, update the website's information as well as the artwork so the preview stays accurate. Do not add a claim to the image that the destination page does not support. For a normal image post instead of a shared webpage, use the square post tool or portrait tool. For a text-heavy graphic, the text export page explains the readability check in more detail.

Questions people ask

Does downloading this image change my website's link preview?

No. Host the image and configure your webpage's sharing metadata separately, then test the actual shared URL.

Why does Facebook still show an old image?

The issue may involve cached preview data, different page metadata, or an inaccessible image URL. Recompressing the file alone does not address those website settings.

Can I use a screenshot of my whole webpage?

You can prepare one, but small page text is often unreadable in a card. A focused relevant image or a concise designed title usually communicates the destination more clearly.
