Resize a LinkedIn profile photo without overprocessing your face

Prepare a centred square from a clean portrait. Keep the face recognisable at a small size and avoid sharpening that makes skin or hair look artificial.

Select the portrait before choosing export settings

A useful LinkedIn portrait shows a face clearly without requiring the viewer to open the picture. Start with a well focused photo that has enough light and a background that does not compete with the person. If the face occupies a tiny part of a group photograph, cropping it tightly may reveal that there were never enough source pixels for a clean headshot.

This page selects our 800×800 square preset. It is an export choice for preparing the image, not a claim that LinkedIn displays your avatar at that size. The visible portrait is often much smaller, so judge expression, framing, and recognisability at normal profile size.

Leave room around the head and check how the square would look with rounded edges. Avoid a crop that removes the top of the hair just to make the face larger. A comfortable head and shoulders composition usually reads more naturally than an extreme close-up that feels cramped beside the surrounding profile information.

Preserve natural detail through the resize

Open the original portrait and move the crop around the person. Look at the eyes, glasses, hairline, and shoulders as you adjust it. The tool crops the source rather than stretching it, so the face should keep its proportions. If the entire photo needs exposure or colour correction, make that adjustment in a photo editor before this final export.

The preset applies light edge enhancement after resizing. Keep it modest. Skin pores, beard texture, and strands of hair can become harsh when sharpening is pushed too far, especially on an image that already contains camera processing. Compare the result with the source at a similar viewing size and keep the version that looks natural.

Compression can help make a large camera original easier to upload, but the smallest possible file is not the goal for a profile image. Check the actual eyes and facial contours rather than accepting a result simply because its file size is lower. If the source has missed focus, choose another portrait instead of increasing sharpening repeatedly.

Review the portrait in the real profile layout

Upload your downloaded image through LinkedIn's profile controls, then review how it sits beside your name, headline, and background photo. The picture should remain clear without being visually louder than everything around it. If the crop looks wrong in the platform's preview, adjust it there or return to the original and make another local export.

Check the profile on your phone too. A portrait that feels balanced on a wide screen can look crowded when the interface is smaller. Review it at normal scale rather than zooming into every skin detail. Visitors need to recognise you, and a believable portrait serves that purpose better than a heavily sharpened one.

Store the original photograph separately from the social export. You may later need a different crop for a speaker biography or another professional profile. This tool prepares the image locally and does not retouch skin, change clothing, remove the background, generate a new headshot, or update your LinkedIn account. Any platform processing occurs after you choose to upload the finished file yourself.

If you wear glasses, inspect reflections in the original before selecting the portrait. Resizing can preserve the frame edges but cannot reveal eyes hidden behind glare, so another photograph may serve the profile better.

Questions people ask

Can this create a professional headshot from a selfie?

It can improve the crop and prepare a smaller export. It does not change lighting, clothing, expression, or the background.

Why does stronger sharpening make my face look rough?

Sharpening increases edge contrast throughout the image, including skin texture. Reduce it if the result looks harsh.

Is the 800×800 preset mandatory for LinkedIn?

No. It is our square preparation size. Check the current profile uploader for its accepted image requirements.
