Convert an image to JPG for WhatsApp sharing

Choose JPEG for a photograph, not by habit

JPEG is a practical format for an ordinary photograph when you need a widely usable sharing file. Converting to JPEG makes a new image file with JPEG encoding. Changing a name from .png or .webp to .jpg does not perform that conversion and can confuse the app or person receiving it.

This page starts with JPEG quality at 92%, original dimensions, no crop, sharpening off, and no target size. These are export choices for a first comparison. They do not guarantee a smaller file than the input. A tiny, already optimised source may become larger after conversion, while a detailed PNG photograph may shrink substantially. Inspect the result rather than assuming the extension predicts the file size.

JPEG does not keep transparency. If your source is a logo or cut-out product with transparent areas, check the exported background carefully. Set the intended background in a design editor before conversion when its colour matters. If transparency is required by the recipient, use a suitable PNG or the original file instead of forcing a JPEG. WhatsApp photo messages and Document attachments are separate delivery decisions that you make after downloading.

Make and inspect a real converted file

Select a supported image and let the tool decode it before judging the conversion. If the browser cannot open your source, renaming it will not help. Use your source application to export a supported still image, then return here. The phone preparation guide explains a mobile workflow and how to keep your original separate from the sharing copy.

  1. Choose the original image and keep JPEG selected.
  2. Leave dimensions unchanged for the first comparison.
  3. Inspect fine texture, lettering, and any formerly transparent area.
  4. Download the genuine JPEG and open the saved file.
  5. Attach it in WhatsApp using the workflow that suits the recipient.

Conversion does not add image detail. A low-resolution source remains low-resolution when exported as a JPEG, and a compressed source does not become an original again. If the file is larger than useful, choose smaller fit dimensions or a slightly lower quality and compare from the original. Avoid converting the previous export repeatedly while experimenting, because that adds another lossy encode each time.

Match the file to the conversation

For a normal chat photograph, an inline photo message can be convenient. For a recipient who explicitly requested a file attachment, use the Document option in WhatsApp after saving the JPEG. This website does not choose the sending mode, activate HD, or upload the image on your behalf. Review the attachment preview so you know which file you selected.

Keep the original if you may need a different format later. A JPEG cannot provide the transparency of the PNG you discarded or the editable layers of a design project. Similarly, converting a screenshot to JPEG can introduce artifacts around small text. For a screen capture, compare the screenshot tool, which starts with PNG and sharpening off.

Do not use a file conversion as proof that an image meets an organisation's requirements. A recipient may care about dimensions, a size limit, or document content as well as format. Check those instructions separately and inspect the actual saved output. If you need an image under a particular file budget, use an exact size tool and review readability after processing. If no conversion is needed, sending the original can be simpler than introducing another JPEG version into your file library.

Questions people ask

Is renaming .png to .jpg enough?

No. It changes the name, not the image encoding. Download a genuine JPEG export from the tool instead.

Will a transparent logo stay transparent?

No. JPEG has no transparency. Set the intended background in an editor or keep a suitable PNG if the recipient needs transparent areas.

Why is the JPEG larger than the source?

The input may already be small or encoded differently. Conversion does not guarantee size reduction. Compare lower quality or smaller dimensions from the original if a smaller file is needed.
