Crop a photo into a portrait without guessing the framing

Use a 1080 by 1350 starting canvas and inspect the parts the portrait crop removes. A narrower shape should preserve the point of the photograph.

Check whether the source supports a portrait composition

A portrait crop can give a person or product more attention by removing unnecessary space at the sides. It can also remove context that makes the image useful. Look at the original before selecting the shape: a person holding a wide object or a group spread across a room may not fit into a narrow frame. The cropper cannot move those objects closer together.

This page starts with a 4:5 export at 1080 by 1350 pixels. Those dimensions are an example for the workflow, not a rule for every platform or gallery. Change them when the destination asks for something different. Exact output crops to the chosen ratio. If preserving the complete photograph is more important than obtaining a portrait-shaped file, choose Fit within and accept its original proportions instead. No background extension or border padding is added here.

Review headroom and context as you reposition the crop

Add the photo and move the crop where the source provides room for adjustment. Watch the top of a head, hands, a product label and anything that explains the action. The most attractive centered face may still leave an awkward cut through an arm or remove the object being discussed. Check the complete new frame rather than focusing only on one feature.

For a photograph that already has portrait proportions, changing to 4:5 can remove space above and below instead of only at the sides. For a wide source, it may remove a large part of the scene. The tool does not know which content matters and does not perform automatic subject-aware reframing. If the useful content cannot fit, try another source, choose a different ratio or present the full image. Do not expect sharpening to compensate for missing visual context.

Inspect the actual output before uploading it

The preset uses JPEG at 90% quality with Light sharpening. Compare skin, fine hair, patterned clothing and any small lettering at the final display size. Exact size can upscale a small input, but it cannot create the detail of a higher-resolution source. Keep the original photo so another destination does not have to start from this cropped and compressed copy.

Download a candidate and put it into the intended draft or website layout. Check the main display and any profile grid or gallery thumbnail, since those may apply a different crop. A local file cannot prevent the receiving app from processing it again. If a byte cap is required, use the destination's actual limit and check the result after applying it. All image processing here happens in the browser, and the source files are not replaced.

Use another portrait ratio when the story needs it

A tall story background, an editorial portrait and a product card do not necessarily need the same proportions. Change the width and height for the real use rather than treating 4:5 as a universal answer. Keep essential content away from areas the destination covers with controls or captions, and inspect its current preview. The cropper produces a still image; it does not create a video, place interface-safe guides on a platform or generate the missing background around a subject.

Inspect that still image at its real phone display size before treating the chosen crop as final.

Questions people ask

Can a wide group photo become a portrait without losing people?

Only if the required people fit inside the narrower crop. Otherwise use the full image, a different ratio or another source photograph.

Is a portrait crop the same as a story image?

No. A story may use a different ratio and display controls over the image. Check the specific destination and change the crop dimensions accordingly.

Does the cropper choose the subject automatically?

No. The starting crop is centered. Review and adjust the position where possible, including headroom, hands and any object that needs to remain visible.
