Prepare a simple square source for the small circular cover. This page uses our 720×720 square export, so keep the icon or subject near the centre.

Use a source with at least 720×720 pixels in the retained crop. Smaller sources or difficult size targets can produce smaller output dimensions. Check the downloaded file.

Design for a small circular view

A Highlight cover has very little space to explain itself. A simple icon, a recognisable object, or a clear face can work better than a complete poster. Tiny words, multiple symbols, and busy backgrounds become difficult to distinguish when the cover is viewed beside other circles on a profile.

This page opens our 720×720 pixel square export. It is a source preparation choice, not an official Highlight-cover dimension claim. Instagram lets you choose the visible cover area in its own interface, so inspect that circle before saving. The corners of a square are not dependable places for an essential mark or letter.

Create the artwork in a design app first. The tool can crop, resize, sharpen edges, and encode a finished image; it cannot draw icons, add text, recolour a logo, or generate a matching set of covers. If you want several categories to look related, give their source designs consistent margins, stroke weight, and background treatment before export. Different shapes can appear different in size even when their source canvases have identical dimensions, so judge them visually rather than by numbers alone.

Keep the centre useful and the edges expendable

Select the finished image and position the square crop around the part that should remain visible. For an icon, keep its full outline away from the boundary. For a photograph, make sure the useful subject is recognisable without the surrounding scene. A very wide subject may need a redesigned source rather than an increasingly tight crop.

  1. Open a clean icon export or original photograph.
  2. Adjust the square crop around the central subject.
  3. Inspect the result at a small size, not just full screen.
  4. Download the JPEG source prepared by this preset.
  5. Choose the image in Instagram and inspect its circular cover framing.

The square tool preview does not guarantee the exact visible area of Instagram's circle. Leave room to reposition it there. If a hard-edged logo looks rough after JPEG encoding, compare a PNG export in Custom mode using the finished square artwork. A PNG source does not guarantee that Instagram preserves the format, but it can give you another local version to evaluate before posting.

Compress a photo

Review a cover set together on the profile

A cover may look good on its own but feel inconsistent beside the others. Look at the set at approximately its displayed size. Check that one icon is not noticeably heavier, one background is not much brighter, and one subject does not feel cramped. Fix those design differences in the editable originals rather than trying to disguise them with compression settings.

Avoid relying on long text inside the image. Use concise Highlight names in the profile interface and keep the cover visual simple. If the topic is a place or product category, choose a recognisable symbol or clear detail rather than a miniature screenshot of a menu. The purpose of the circle is quick recognition, not to reproduce a whole page.

Keep a source folder for the complete set and a separate folder for exported covers. That makes it easier to add a category later without rebuilding the style from a compressed download. Inspect the saved cover on the actual profile after applying it, because the app's framing and display may differ from your local preview. For a Story image that sits inside a Highlight, use the separate Story size tool; a square cover is not a replacement for the full vertical Story asset.

Questions people ask

Does this create Highlight cover icons?

No. Supply a finished icon, logo, or photo. The tool prepares a square image and you select the final circular framing in Instagram.

Is 720×720 an official Highlight size requirement?

No. It is this page's square export choice. Check the actual circular cover preview in Instagram before saving.

Why is my text difficult to read in the cover?

Highlight covers are viewed small. Use a simpler design with less text, and put the category name in the Highlight label rather than depending on tiny embedded lettering.
