A personal background is not a company cover

LinkedIn has several wide image placements, and their dimensions are not interchangeable. This page prepares a personal profile background. A company Page cover has a different shape and its own upload guidance, so using one file for both can crop the artwork unexpectedly. Decide which profile you are editing before exporting.

LinkedIn recommends 1584×396 for a personal cover image and lists JPG or PNG files smaller than 8 MB. The 4:1 shape is very wide. A normal camera photo may lose much of its top and bottom, so choose an image whose useful content already forms a horizontal band.

Think about the portrait and the text placed around the banner in the profile interface. Keep essential information away from regions that could be obscured. A background can work well as a clear photograph or a restrained brand graphic without repeating every detail from your headline and contact section inside the image itself.

Check the artwork before applying compression

Select the personal cover preset and open your clean source image. Move the crop until the important subject sits comfortably in the visible band. If a title or logo is embedded in a corner that the crop removes, return to the original design. The tool moves the whole image crop and cannot rearrange separate elements.

For photography, compare the JPEG export around fine texture and smooth colour transitions. A wide office scene may contain windows, repeating lines, and small faces that reveal aggressive compression. Keep enough quality for the details that actually matter, but avoid treating the platform's maximum file allowance as a target you must reach.

For graphics with lettering, inspect the edges at normal size and consider a PNG export through Custom if JPEG creates visible noise. PNG can be larger, so check the downloaded file size against the current upload requirement. Sharpening should stay light when thin text or a detailed logo is already sharp in the source.

Judge the banner beside your actual portrait

Add the downloaded file to your LinkedIn profile and inspect the preview before saving. Check how the portrait overlaps the background, whether the important subject is visible, and whether the banner feels balanced with the profile name and headline. A design that looks centred in isolation may need a different visual balance once those elements are present.

Review both mobile and desktop. If wording becomes too small or disappears behind the interface, simplify the original design instead of increasing the export dimensions alone. A short, clear message is easier to maintain across screen sizes than a collection of small service descriptions scattered around the banner.

Save the editable master and the prepared export separately. When your role or branding changes, a fresh export avoids another round of editing a compressed banner. This page prepares the image locally; it does not alter profile text, publish a cover, or guarantee that LinkedIn will retain the uploaded file without further processing. Always check the actual public profile after the new image has appeared.

For an office or workshop photograph, check whether the visible crop explains the setting without relying on small signs. A clean recognisable environment can communicate your work more clearly than a row of unreadable service labels.

Questions people ask

Can I use this file for a LinkedIn company Page?

Use the separate company cover page. Personal profile backgrounds and company covers have different image specifications.

Why does my portrait cover the banner text?

The profile layout places the portrait over part of the background. Move that wording in your original design and check the platform preview.

Can compression repair a fuzzy logo in my background?

No. Export a cleaner logo from the source design. Compression and sharpening cannot reconstruct missing letter shapes.
