Prepare an artwork image for Instagram

Keep control of line work and the full composition. This page starts with a PNG export at the source dimensions, with sharpening off, so you can compare before choosing a final crop.

Separate the artwork master from the social copy

An illustration, painting scan, or lettering design deserves a publishing copy that you can change without touching the master. Keep your layered document, original scan, or full-resolution photograph in its own folder. A social export is for viewing on a screen, not for replacing a print file or an editable project.

This page starts in Custom mode with PNG, original dimensions, no crop, and sharpening off. That makes it useful for inspecting flat colour, fine line work, and an existing composition without forcing it into a preset rectangle. It is not a claim that PNG stays unchanged after you post to Instagram. The platform controls the final processing.

If you photograph a physical painting, correct glare, perspective, and lighting before exporting. This compressor cannot make a tilted canvas square, remove glass reflections, or match a print colour profile. For a digital illustration, export a clean raster copy from your drawing application first. Avoid taking a screenshot of the application window, because interface scaling and accidental margins can become part of the image you are trying to prepare.

Check fine lines before choosing a smaller export

Thin strokes and small gaps can disappear when an artwork is reduced. Inspect the smallest meaningful details: hatching, pencil texture, lettering counters, and outlines on a flat background. A line that is clear in a large drawing may become narrower than a screen pixel in the social version. More JPEG quality cannot bring that line back after a resize.

  1. Open the clean artwork file with the starting settings unchanged.
  2. Inspect the complete composition and fine line work.
  3. If you need smaller dimensions, choose Fit inside and enter a suitable box.
  4. Compare the reduced result with the original before downloading.
  5. If a crop is needed, choose an exact shape deliberately and check every edge.

PNG may be larger than a JPEG, especially for a photograph of textured paint or paper. That is expected and does not mean the export failed. Compare a high quality JPEG if the PNG is impractically large. For a flat illustration, PNG can be a useful source format; for a photographic artwork reproduction, JPEG may be a practical sharing choice.

Show details without misrepresenting the whole piece

If a full composition makes the artwork's texture too small to appreciate, prepare a separate close-up from the master. Include an overall view as well, so a viewer can understand the relationship between the detail and the complete work. The carousel tool can help you prepare matching image shapes, but it does not create the sequence or add labels for you.

Be cautious with sharpening. A little edge contrast may help a photographic reproduction after downsizing, but it can change the character of pencil marks, paper grain, or a delicate brush edge. Start with sharpening off as this page does. Compare a light setting only if there is a specific softness you want to address. Do not use strong sharpening as a substitute for a focused original scan or photograph.

Check the saved export against the source on the same display, then view it on a phone. Different screens can show colour differently, and this tool does not guarantee colour matching between devices. Add the title, medium, dimensions, and any accessibility description in the post text instead of hiding all that information in tiny image lettering. If you need a designed title card alongside the art, prepare it separately with text graphic export.

Questions people ask

Will PNG prevent Instagram from recompressing my artwork?

No. PNG is this page's starting export format. Instagram controls what happens after upload, so inspect the published result rather than assuming the file stays unchanged.

Why is the artwork PNG larger than my original JPEG?

PNG and JPEG encode images differently. Re-encoding a detailed photograph as PNG can increase size and does not restore detail already lost in the JPEG.

Can sharpening recover pencil lines lost after resizing?

No. Sharpening increases contrast around existing edges. If a line disappears at the chosen dimensions, use a larger export or include a closer detail image.
