Check the publishing route before making the cover

A Shorts cover workflow can depend on the device, account, and publishing interface. Do not assume a downloaded image can be selected in every YouTube app screen. Open your actual publishing workflow first and confirm which options it offers. If it asks you to choose a video frame, image preparation alone does not put that frame inside the video.

YouTube's thumbnail help describes current custom thumbnail options and eligibility. Refer to that guidance and the controls visible in your account rather than treating a general image preset as permission to upload a separate cover. The preset here produces our 1080×1920 vertical export; it does not unlock an account feature.

Choose artwork that honestly represents the Short. A dramatic crop that hides the actual subject can become confusing when someone opens the video. If you need a designed frame inside the video, use a video editor to include it and check that the publishing interface can select the intended frame.

Prepare a vertical composition with breathing room

Open a clean source and inspect the 9:16 crop. Landscape images lose substantial space at the sides when fitted to a tall frame, so place the meaningful action near the centre. Move the crop rather than accepting the first position automatically. Keep a complete face or product where possible instead of retaining an unimportant strip of background.

If the artwork contains text, remember that different YouTube surfaces can show different previews or overlays. Avoid placing essential words right against the boundaries. The tool cannot predict every interface crop or relocate a text layer, so revise the source design if its wording depends on the full edge of the frame remaining visible.

Compare the export on a phone. Check skin edges, lettering, and gradients before choosing stronger sharpening. A cover needs to look clear at its actual display size, not only when enlarged in an editor. Light edge contrast can help a resized image, but strong halos make already bold lettering look brittle.

Keep image preparation separate from video editing

Download the candidate to a location you can find from your publishing device. If your account supports selecting that image, preview the result before saving. If your workflow instead uses a frame from the video, return to your video project and follow that route. This tool does not insert images into video, control timing, burn in a cover, or change a Short's thumbnail automatically.

Check the public result on the surfaces that matter to you. A channel grid, a recommendation, and the playback view may not show artwork in exactly the same way. Treat the selected cover as one part of publishing rather than a guarantee that the same composition appears everywhere.

Keep the original vertical design together with the video project and prepared image. That allows you to change the wording or crop later without reusing a compressed download. If the source was only a small extracted screenshot, a better frame or a fresh design export is likely to help more than repeatedly resizing it. No image setting can restore detail that never existed in the source.

If the Short belongs to a series, compare the new image with the earlier covers at small size. A consistent subject treatment can help the collection feel related without repeating tiny decorative details that viewers cannot read.

Questions people ask

Will this upload a custom Shorts cover for me?

No. It prepares a static image. Available thumbnail controls depend on your YouTube account and publishing interface, which you must check separately.

Can this place my cover inside a video?

No. Use a video editor if your publishing route requires selecting a frame that is part of the video.

Is 1080×1920 a guaranteed Shorts upload requirement?

No. It is our vertical artwork preset. Consult YouTube's current thumbnail help and your account controls for upload requirements.
