Prepare a readable screenshot for WhatsApp

A smaller screenshot is only useful if the message remains readable. Start with PNG at source dimensions, then compare any reduction before sending.

Keep the information, not the unnecessary screen area

A screenshot often has one useful region surrounded by menus, empty space, or unrelated messages. Reducing the entire image can make the important text smaller without helping the reader. First decide what needs to be shared. If appropriate, crop the screenshot in your device's editor before bringing it here, while keeping enough context that the content is not misleading.

This page starts with PNG at the original dimensions, no crop, and sharpening off. That is a cautious starting point for text and interface edges. It does not guarantee a smaller PNG than the source. Screenshots are often already efficiently stored, and a canvas export can be similar in size or larger. Compare a change only when it serves a real sharing need.

Check visible personal information before sending. Names, account details, browser tabs, notifications, or private messages can appear outside the region you intended to show. This compressor is not a secure redaction tool. Use an appropriate editor to remove sensitive information permanently, then inspect the saved result carefully. A crop or black rectangle should not be assumed to solve every privacy problem without reviewing the actual file.

Test the smallest characters after every resize

Text is not like a photograph of a landscape. A single missing pixel can change a small character, punctuation mark, or number. Inspect the exact line the recipient needs rather than judging the screenshot's overall crispness. Error codes, dates, amounts, and addresses deserve particular attention because a visually plausible but wrong reading can cause confusion.

  1. Select the original screenshot or your carefully edited copy.
  2. Review the no-resize PNG export as a starting point.
  3. If you reduce dimensions, inspect the smallest necessary text again.
  4. Download and open the saved file at a readable viewing size.
  5. Choose a photo or Document attachment in WhatsApp as appropriate.

PNG does not use the JPEG quality slider in the same way as a lossy photo encode, so moving a quality control is not a dependable method of shrinking a PNG. Reducing unnecessary dimensions or comparing a JPEG changes the tradeoff, but the result may harm fine text. For a strict file-size requirement, use a target-size tool and judge readability after processing, rather than assuming a target guarantees a useful screenshot.

Use text or a document when an image is the wrong format

Sometimes the best version is not an image. If you are sharing a short error message, copy the text into the chat as well as attaching the screenshot. That makes it easier to search, quote, or read with accessibility tools. A screen capture is useful for layout and context, but it is not a replacement for text that the recipient must reuse.

This tool does not perform OCR, extract a table, combine a long conversation into a PDF, or certify a document. A long scrolling screenshot may become awkward to navigate even when every pixel is preserved. Consider a proper document export or several clearly labelled screenshots when the recipient needs to read a long record.

If the recipient needs to retain an image file with readable small text, review the Document attachment workflow. If you send it as a normal photo, check the received image as well as the preview, because WhatsApp controls the delivery processing. Keep the original screenshot until the task is finished so you can regenerate a different version if necessary. For an ordinary camera photograph rather than interface text, the HD photo page offers a more suitable starting preset.

Questions people ask

Will this always make my screenshot PNG smaller?

No. A screenshot may already be well compressed. The starting PNG export preserves dimensions, and the new file can be larger. Reduce only when the result remains readable.

Can it read text from the screenshot?

No. There is no OCR or text extraction. Copy important text into your message separately when possible.

Should I convert a screenshot to JPEG?

Compare it only if a smaller file is useful. JPEG can add artifacts around small characters, so inspect the exact text the recipient needs before sending.
