Prepare photos for an Instagram carousel

Build a set that looks intentional when swiped. Start with our 1080×1350 portrait export, then inspect every slide rather than relying on one crop for the whole sequence.

Use a source with at least 1080×1350 pixels in the retained crop. Smaller sources or difficult size targets can produce smaller output dimensions. Check the downloaded file.

Choose a shared shape before choosing the order

A carousel is a sequence, so the transition between images matters as much as the first slide. Decide whether your set is mainly portraits, wide photographs, or designed graphics before exporting. This page starts at 1080×1350 pixels, our portrait setting. It gives a consistent working frame, but you can choose a square or landscape preset if that better suits the material.

Do not assume the same centre crop works for every source. One photo may need room above a face, another may need the entire product base, and a third may contain a sign near an edge. Review each image in the queue. If keeping the whole composition is essential, prepare a finished canvas in a separate editor rather than letting a crop remove important content.

Instagram's composer can offer different framing controls across accounts and versions. Check the actual publishing preview for the whole set. A consistent export makes preparation easier, but it does not guarantee how a platform will present mixed shapes. Avoid relying on an account feature you have not checked on the device you will use to post.

Make the sequence readable when swiped

Start with a frame that explains what the carousel is about. A first slide containing only a tiny detail can be confusing unless that detail is the point of the story. Follow it with complementary views rather than near-duplicates: an overall product, a useful close-up, the item in use, then a comparison or supporting detail.

  1. Gather the original edited files in a clearly named folder.
  2. Select the intended export shape and process the set.
  3. Open each result, adjust its crop, and check labels or faces.
  4. Download and inspect the files in your planned order.
  5. Confirm the order and framing again in Instagram before publishing.

The tool exports individual images; it does not publish, merge slides, or design a continuous panorama. Rename or organise your files so you can identify the intended sequence after downloading. Keep the originals separate from the publishing copies. If you change the shape later, regenerate from those originals rather than from an already compressed set.

Compress a photo

Keep detail and tone consistent across the set

A swipe from a bright product photo to a very dark close-up can feel accidental. Adjust exposure, white balance, and colour in your photo editor before compressing. This tool changes dimensions, format, compression, and edge sharpening; it does not match the lighting or colour between slides. A consistent editing pass is especially useful when photos came from different phones or were taken under different lights.

Compare fine detail on more than one slide. A plain background and a textured scene may need different amounts of data even at identical dimensions. Different output file sizes are normal and do not by themselves show a quality problem. Look for readable type, natural texture, and an absence of bright sharpening halos.

If the set includes a designed title card, inspect the smallest text at phone size. Its file format may deserve a separate decision from the photographs. You can prepare a graphic with the text export tool, then check how it looks beside the photo slides. A caption should carry essential explanations too, so the story does not depend entirely on text embedded in an image. For a square sequence, use the square resizer.

Questions people ask

Does this combine photos into one carousel file?

No. You receive separate image files and choose their order in Instagram. The tool does not publish or combine them into a video.

Can I use different crops for different slides?

Yes. Inspect each source and adjust its crop independently while keeping the intended export dimensions consistent.

Why do slides at the same dimensions have different file sizes?

Image complexity differs. Fine texture and noise require more data than flat backgrounds. Compare the visible result rather than trying to make all file sizes identical.
