Fit an image inside a box without cutting off the edges

Set maximum width and height, then keep the original proportions. The output can be smaller than the box on one side because no crop or padding is added.

Treat the width and height as bounds, not a new canvas shape

Fit within scales an image until both dimensions are inside the box you specify. It keeps the original ratio and the complete frame. For example, a 4000 by 3000 landscape image fitted inside a 1920 by 1920 box becomes 1920 by 1440. The shorter side does not become 1920 because doing that would require stretching, cropping or padding.

The preset starts with that 1920-square box as an adjustable example, not a destination requirement. Use the actual bounds needed by a page, message or application. A portrait source will reach the height limit instead, while a panorama may have a much shorter output height. Check the reported dimensions before downloading. If the receiver insists on exactly matching both dimensions, Fit within may not meet its rule; choose a suitable exact crop only if removing content is acceptable.

Keep the whole scene without inventing borders or background

This mode is useful for artwork, group photographs, scans and product images where every edge matters. It does not add borders, letterboxing or an expanded background to fill the unused area of a conceptual box. The exported file simply has the resized image's own proportions. If a design needs a fixed canvas with padding, create that composition in an editor first.

Fit within also avoids enlarging a source that is already smaller than the bounds. A 900-pixel-wide photo does not acquire genuine extra detail because the box allows 1920 pixels. Keeping that smaller output may be the honest result. If a full image still looks cropped on a website, check the site's own styling or gallery preview: it may be applying an additional crop after the file has been uploaded. The local fit operation cannot control that later layout behavior.

Choose encoding after checking the resized composition

The initial output uses JPEG at 90% quality with Light sharpening. That is a photographic starting point. Use PNG and consider sharpening off when the source contains a transparent logo, sharp diagram labels or other graphic edges. PNG preserves existing alpha; JPEG and the current WebP output here receive a white background. A format conversion does not remove an opaque background from the source.

Inspect the resized file at its intended display size, including important text and faces. Downscaling still changes pixels even when the whole frame remains visible. Strong sharpening cannot restore details that have become too small. Add a file cap only when the destination needs one, and inspect the final dimensions and quality after applying it. Download a sample, open it and confirm the receiving workflow accepts its actual size. Processing runs on your device and leaves the original image unchanged.

Use fit for mixed batches with different proportions

A mixed set can share one bounding box without every image sharing one output shape. Portraits, squares and landscapes retain their own proportions, which is often preferable for a personal album or an artwork archive of delivery copies. The files will have different pixel dimensions and may have different byte sizes. Review the complete images rather than assuming a common box makes them identical. If a catalog truly needs one fixed shape, plan deliberate crops or prepare padded source canvases in an editor.

Check each output's reported dimensions so the complete frame also meets the receiving workflow's actual requirements.

Questions people ask

Why is one output dimension smaller than the box I entered?

Fit preserves the original ratio. One side reaches its bound while the other stays smaller; no stretching, cropping or padding is added to fill the box.

Can I enlarge a small image with Fit within?

Fit within does not enlarge smaller sources. Exact size can upscale, but it cannot recover missing detail and may crop the source.

Does Fit within add white bars?

No. It keeps the image's own shape. Use an image editor if you need a fixed-size canvas with borders or letterboxing.
