Keep a transparent background when exporting PNG

Use PNG output for an image that already has transparency. The tool can resize that image, but it does not remove a background from an opaque photo.

Begin with a source that already contains transparency

A transparent asset contains an alpha channel that describes which pixels are visible. That is different from a picture of a checkerboard. If you downloaded a screenshot showing a checkerboard behind a logo, those squares may be ordinary visible pixels. Saving that screenshot as PNG will not remove them. Open the real asset in an editor and check that the background can actually show through.

This workflow is useful for an existing cutout, raster logo or overlay that needs a smaller delivery version. It cannot identify a subject, erase a background or replace a badly cut edge. Make those edits in the original design first. Keep an editable master and export a transparent PNG from it, then use this page when you need a different raster size without deliberately flattening the background.

Choose PNG before changing any size controls

The preset keeps original pixels, selects PNG and turns sharpening off. PNG is the output here that preserves existing transparency. This tool's JPEG and WebP exports use an opaque white background, so do not choose them for an asset that must work over different page colors. The quality slider does not control PNG's lossless compression.

For a smaller copy, choose Fit within and enter the available box. That preserves the source proportions without cutting off the edges. Exact size crops to the chosen shape and may remove a shadow or part of the mark, so use it only when you want that crop. Avoid an unnecessary byte cap on a master asset. Reaching a tight cap can require pixel reduction, which may make a small logo or narrow outline difficult to read.

Inspect soft edges in the layout where they will appear

View the downloaded PNG against both light and dark backgrounds. A cutout may contain pale edge pixels from an earlier white-background edit. The transparency can be technically intact while the halo still looks wrong on a dark section. Similarly, a dark logo may disappear on a dark page even though the export is correct. Fix those design issues in the source rather than compressing repeatedly.

Check the image at its actual display size. Semitransparent shadows and narrow strokes can change visually when reduced, even with PNG output. For web publishing, set the element's dimensions and provide useful alternative text when the image conveys information. A decorative overlay may need different accessibility treatment from a linked company logo. Download a test export and place it in the real layout before processing a group of matching assets. Your source remains on your device throughout the conversion.

Check a transparent mark before exporting a whole set

Try a dark logo with a soft shadow and a second logo designed for a dark background. Place both downloaded PNGs in a temporary light section and a dark section of your layout. Look at the narrow strokes and the shadow boundary at the intended display size. If one version becomes invisible, select the right source variant rather than flattening it into a different background color. If a white halo appears, revisit the original cutout. A file can retain its alpha channel and still be a poor visual match for a particular page. Check both properties before applying shared settings to all variants.

Questions people ask

Can this remove a photo background?

No. The tool preserves transparency already in the decoded source. Use a background editor first if your photo has an opaque background.

Why does the exported logo still have a halo?

The source may contain pale or dark edge pixels from an earlier edit. Transparency alone cannot repair those colors; check and fix the source against your intended background.

Can I keep transparency in this tool's WebP output?

The current WebP export is flattened onto white. Use PNG output for alpha preservation, even though the WebP format itself can support transparency.
