Crop an image to a square with deliberate framing

Start with a 1080 by 1080 square export. Reposition the crop to preserve the important subject, and check the destination's preview before using the final file.

Choose a square when it suits the subject and destination

A square image can work for a product card, a social tile or a profile source, but the shape itself does not guarantee a strong composition. Look at the original and identify the content that must remain visible. A centered object may fit naturally, while a wide group portrait may require losing people at the sides. Do not approve the shape before checking those consequences.

This preset uses 1080 by 1080 pixels as an export example, not a requirement for every website or social service. Check the destination's current instructions when it has a specific size or byte limit. If the full rectangular photo must remain visible, use Fit within instead. That keeps the source ratio and does not create a square by adding borders. The cropper cannot extend the background or rearrange objects to make a difficult composition fit.

Move the crop and check the new boundaries

Add the photograph and inspect the preview. When the source shape leaves a movable crop area, adjust its position using the crop control or the preview interaction. Keep enough room around hair, hands, product ends and small signs. A centered default is just a starting position; the tool does not recognize the subject or know which edge contains important information.

For a profile picture, remember that the destination may display the square inside a circle. A long wordmark or a face close to a corner can still be cut off in that circular view. Check the actual app preview and make a suitable source composition if necessary. For a product card, inspect handles, straps and shadows rather than only the central object. If no crop position can retain the needed content, choose a different source or accept a different output shape.

Review the export quality separately from the crop

The initial format is JPEG at 90% quality with Light sharpening. That is suitable as a photographic starting point, but transparent graphics should use PNG with sharpening off when the original alpha is needed. JPEG output receives a white background. Exact size can enlarge a small source, yet the result cannot contain the real detail of a larger original.

Inspect the final file at the expected display size. A clear crop can still contain compression damage, while a high-quality encode can still have the wrong composition. Make those decisions separately. Download the square, open it and place it in the actual draft or layout. Keep the source photograph and save this as a distinct delivery copy. The tool processes locally and does not publish to a profile, shop or social account for you.

Reuse the source instead of repeatedly trimming the square

If you later need a portrait or landscape copy, return to the original rather than cropping the square again. The original may contain useful space that the square export removed. Repeatedly working from delivery files also adds avoidable encoding steps when JPEG is used. Give exports names that identify their role, such as a card or profile copy, and keep the original available. A small amount of file organization makes later changes easier without asking a cropper to recreate content outside the saved frame.

Review the downloaded square once more at its real card width, since a large preview can conceal an awkward composition.

Questions people ask

Can I make a square without cutting anything off?

Fit within preserves the full frame but keeps its original shape. This tool does not add borders or background padding to create an uncropped square.

Why does my square still look cropped in a profile?

The destination may show it inside a circle or use another preview crop. Check that app's actual preview and keep important details away from the corners.

Can the cropper add a missing product edge?

No. It can reposition the crop within the source, but it cannot generate content outside the photograph. Use another source when the required detail is missing.
