Sharpen a photo by adjusting its edge contrast

Light sharpening can make an already focused image look crisper. It cannot reconstruct missing detail, fix camera shake or turn an out-of-focus photo into a sharp original.

Identify softness that sharpening can reasonably address

Start with the best original and decide why it looks soft. A focused photograph may lose some apparent crispness when reduced for a small display. A mild edge adjustment can help that delivery copy. Motion blur, missed focus and heavy compression are different problems. They remove or obscure information that an edge contrast filter cannot recover.

Look at a meaningful detail such as eyelashes, a building edge or lettering on a product. If that detail is absent in the source, stronger sharpening usually emphasizes its damaged outline instead of reconstructing it. Keep the original and choose a better frame if you have one. This page uses an unsharp-mask style filter, not an AI restoration model. It does not add realistic missing faces, repair old photographs or remove the noise in a dark camera image.

Set the final dimensions before judging the sharpen amount

This preset starts with the original dimensions, JPEG output and Light sharpening. Add a photo and compare Off with Light first. If the image will be resized, choose that final size before making your decision, because the same filter can look different on the smaller output. A picture that appears restrained at full size can acquire bright outlines when viewed as a thumbnail.

Inspect both the intended display view and a close view. Increase to Medium only when the useful detail improves without obvious halos. Strong is available, but it is not a general best-quality setting. Check hair, tree branches, text and edges against the sky. If noise becomes gritty or skin texture looks harsh, reduce the amount. The goal is a suitable delivery image, not the most dramatic before-and-after preview.

Balance sharpening with compression and the final destination

Sharpening changes pixels before encoding. More pronounced edges can also change the output's file size and expose compression artifacts when you impose a tight byte cap. Avoid making sharpening and quality changes at the same time during a comparison. Adjust one control, inspect the result and then decide whether the other setting needs attention.

For an Instagram copy, select the appropriate crop and leave room for the app's own processing. This filter cannot prevent a platform from resizing or recompressing your photo. For a website image, view it in the actual responsive layout rather than only in the tool. Text graphics and logos may be better with sharpening off, especially when PNG is used to keep their existing edges. Save a new delivery file and keep the source so later exports do not repeatedly sharpen a previously sharpened image. Everything here is processed on your device.

Use one textured edge and one smooth area as a check

A portrait with hair against a plain wall is a useful comparison image. Inspect the hair to see whether the edge adjustment helps, then inspect the wall and skin to see what it makes worse. A stronger result may seem impressive around the hair while revealing noise or producing a bright outline against the wall. Keep the setting that suits the whole picture at its final size. If a photo contains small overlaid lettering, inspect that separately as well; a text halo can become distracting before the main photograph looks obviously oversharpened. Save the chosen delivery copy with a new name.

Questions people ask

Can this sharpener fix a blurry face?

It can change existing edge contrast, but it cannot recover a face that was out of focus or reconstruct missing facial detail. Use a sharper original when possible.

Why are there white lines around my subject?

Those can be sharpening halos. Reduce the Sharpen control and inspect the result at its final display size, especially against bright skies or dark backgrounds.

Should I choose Strong for every photo?

No. Start with Off or Light, then compare. Strong can exaggerate noise, halos and existing JPEG damage rather than improve useful detail.
