Prepare a photo file for a WhatsApp Document attachment

Make a deliberate sharing copy before using WhatsApp's Document option. This page keeps source dimensions and starts with a high quality JPEG export, with sharpening off.

Choose Document in WhatsApp

Choose between the original and a sharing copy

When someone asks you to send a photo as a document, first decide whether they need the actual original or just a readable image file. Those are different requests. If they need your camera original, a master for editing, or a file whose bytes must remain unchanged, attach that original directly. Running it through a compressor creates a new file, even when the dimensions stay the same.

This page starts with source dimensions preserved, JPEG quality at 96%, sharpening off, and no target size. It is useful when you deliberately want a re-encoded sharing copy before attaching it as a Document. It is not an archival copying tool. A JPEG export changes image data and may not retain source metadata or specialist features.

WhatsApp's attachment help describes Document as a separate attachment option from photos. Choose the correct option in WhatsApp after saving the prepared file. The compressor does not select an attachment type or send the image for you. If the receiving organisation has a specific file instruction, follow that instruction rather than assuming a photo message and a Document attachment are interchangeable.

Prepare only the changes the recipient needs

Keep the source untouched in your own folder and work on a copy. Ask what makes the file useful: full composition, readable text, a particular format, or a manageable download. If no change is needed, you may not need compression at all. If the file is unnecessarily large for an ordinary review, compare a deliberate resized version against the source.

  1. Select the source file and review the high quality starting export.
  2. Keep dimensions unchanged unless the recipient needs a smaller copy.
  3. Inspect important text, faces, and fine detail after processing.
  4. Save the export with a name that distinguishes it from the original.
  5. Attach the saved file using WhatsApp's Document option.

Do not rename a file extension to convert a format. If someone needs JPEG, choose JPEG and download a genuine new export. If transparency is essential, JPEG is the wrong choice; keep the original suitable file or choose PNG. The JPG conversion page explains that format decision in more detail.

Check the actual file handoff

A successful send is not the same as a useful delivery. For important work, ask the recipient to open the file and inspect the relevant detail. A preview thumbnail can hide missing characters, an awkward crop, or an unexpected background. If the file will be edited or printed, agree on those needs before reducing dimensions.

This tool handles raster images, not multi-page documents or editable design projects. It does not combine several page photographs into a PDF, add OCR, or certify that a scan is acceptable. If you are sharing a form, receipt, or identity document, check the recipient's specific requirements and use an appropriate document workflow when needed. Never assume that making a file smaller makes it more acceptable.

Keep your original outside the download folder used for sharing copies. If the recipient later needs a different size or format, return to the source instead of re-encoding an already compressed export. Browser processing here keeps the selected image local to the tool, but sending it in WhatsApp is a separate action that you control. For a casual chat photograph where convenient inline viewing matters more than a file handoff, compare the HD photo workflow. For small type captured from a screen, start with the screenshot page.

Questions people ask

Does keeping dimensions mean the image is unchanged?

No. A compressor export is a new encoded file. If the recipient needs the untouched original, attach the original directly without processing it here.

Can this turn several photographs into a PDF?

No. It exports individual image files. Use a document application for multi-page PDFs, OCR, or document-specific requirements.

Where do I choose Document?

Choose it in WhatsApp's attachment menu after downloading your file. This website does not control the attachment type or send the message.
