Convert a still WebP image to PNG

Make a PNG copy for an editor or workflow that needs it. Existing transparency can be retained, but a lossy source cannot become an undamaged original.

Choose PNG when the next application needs a stable still image

A downloaded WebP may be difficult to use in a specific presentation editor, document workflow or graphics application. PNG gives you a still raster image that can carry the decoded source transparency. Use it when that format solves a real compatibility problem, especially for an icon, diagram or cutout that needs an alpha channel.

Start by checking the original. If the image was saved as a small website preview, the converter only has those pixels to work with. Download the full-resolution asset from its legitimate source if available. Do not enlarge a tiny icon and expect clean new detail. Keep the original WebP until you have confirmed the PNG works in the receiving application. This workflow converts a local file; it does not download restricted assets, remove a watermark or recreate an editable vector drawing from a raster image.

Keep dimensions and inspect the transparent boundaries

This page starts in Keep original pixels with PNG output and sharpening off. These settings avoid an intentional resize or edge adjustment during the format change. After adding the WebP, inspect fine strokes, cutout edges and semitransparent shadows. An opaque WebP stays opaque; changing the container to PNG does not automatically identify or remove its background.

For a source that already has transparency, open the downloaded PNG against both a light and a dark background in your editor. That reveals edge pixels which may be difficult to judge against a single preview background. If you later need to shrink the asset, use Fit within and inspect the new dimensions separately. PNG encoding is lossless for the rendered canvas, but resizing or sharpening beforehand changes those rendered pixels. Keep those operations separate when you are trying to preserve an image for further editing.

Plan for file growth and the limits of a raster conversion

A WebP photograph can become substantially larger when represented as PNG. A larger file does not mean that JPEG-like artifacts or previously removed texture have been repaired. The new file stores the decoded pixels, including any flaws already present. If your destination accepts the original WebP and size is the main concern, conversion may provide no useful benefit.

This is also a still-image workflow. It does not preserve animated WebP frames, timing or motion in the PNG export. Keep a moving source intact and use an animation-aware editor for that task. For multiple static assets, test one transparent graphic and one opaque picture before applying shared settings to a batch. Download the outputs, open a sample in the actual receiving application and confirm orientation, dimensions and alpha. The files are processed locally, without an image upload, and your original WebP remains available for other uses.

Compress a photo

Check a graphic that uses semitransparent shadows

A useful test is a cutout with a soft shadow and thin lettering beside it. Open the PNG in the editor that will use the asset and place it over contrasting page colors. Confirm the shadow still blends as expected and the lettering remains visible. Then compare a fully opaque WebP photograph: its larger PNG copy may solve compatibility but provide no visible benefit. Keeping these two tests separate prevents you from assuming that every WebP in a folder needs the same conversion. Retain the source for both, especially if the original includes animation or other content beyond the still export.

Questions people ask

Does WebP to PNG restore detail from a lossy WebP?

No. The PNG contains the pixels decoded from the WebP. Existing compression damage remains, even if the new file occupies more storage.

Will an opaque WebP gain a transparent background?

No. PNG can keep an existing alpha channel, but this tool does not remove backgrounds or turn an opaque subject into a cutout.

Can I keep an animated WebP moving in the PNG?

This page exports a still image and does not preserve animation. Use a workflow that explicitly handles animated frames and keep the original file.
