Prepare a vertical photo for a Facebook Story

Give the Story a deliberate tall frame. This page opens our 1080×1920 JPEG export and lets you check the crop before downloading.

Use a source with at least 1080×1920 pixels in the retained crop. Smaller sources or difficult size targets can produce smaller output dimensions. Check the downloaded file.

Choose a source that can survive a tall crop

A Story uses a tall viewing area, so a vertical source is often easier to prepare than a wide scene. Before exporting, look at what will disappear from the sides of a landscape photograph. If the important people or objects span the whole width, a forced tall crop may be the wrong way to present the image.

Our preset exports 1080×1920 pixels, a 9:16 JPEG. Those dimensions describe this tool's output. They do not guarantee a fixed unobstructed area in every version of Facebook's Story interface. Names, controls, captions, and other overlays can occupy space around the image. Keep the subject away from boundaries that may be covered, then inspect the actual composer.

If the whole source must stay visible, make a finished vertical design with the intended background in your image editor first. This tool does not add borders, automatically place a landscape photo on a tall canvas, or extend the background. For a finished poster, check that it was designed for a phone screen rather than relying on a crop to convert a dense printed flyer into a usable Story.

Check the crop and the image quality separately

First make the composition work. Position the crop around the person, object, or action that explains the frame. Check for hands, product edges, signs, or text close to the top and bottom. Then compare the resized image for visible artifacts, especially if it contains textured clothing, hair, leaves, or a low-light background.

  1. Select the original edited photo with the Story preset active.
  2. Adjust the tall crop and inspect its top, bottom, and sides.
  3. Compare important texture and any embedded lettering.
  4. Download the JPEG and open the saved file on your phone.
  5. Add it to Facebook's Story composer and check the interface over it.

This page prepares a still image. It does not edit a video, add music, create animation, or choose the duration of a Story. Those decisions belong to your publishing app or video editor. If you need a video, do not assume that changing a photo's dimensions turns it into one. Keep the finished still source available for any later design or crop changes.

Keep the message readable under real viewing conditions

A Story is usually viewed at phone size and may be seen quickly. Give a designed image a clear main message and enough contrast to read it without zooming. A small legal line or a complete menu may remain technically present but be practically unreadable. Simplify it in the source design and provide supporting information somewhere the audience can use comfortably.

Avoid placing critical words at the very edge. Interface layout can vary, and a local preview cannot prove that every device leaves the same region visible. Inspect the composer with any stickers, captions, or links you plan to add. Those elements may overlap a face or headline even when the exported image itself is well framed.

Keep separate exports for Stories and feed posts. A portrait feed image uses a different working shape and can show a different portion of the same original. Recreate each from the master instead of recropping an already compressed Story download. After publishing, review the actual image for quality and framing. Facebook can process the file again, so the local export is not a guarantee of the final rendering. For a graphic where clean typography matters more than photo texture, compare the text export tool with your finished design.
